We are halfway through the Test series between India and Australia. What was expected to be a contest has been pretty one-sided so far. With 2 games left, India lead the series 2-0. This means they cannot lose the series and so have retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. In fact, India have not lost a Test series to Australia for over 8 years, be it at home or Down Under.
Both the Nagpur and Delhi Tests ended within 3 days. Australia lost 32 out of 40 wickets to spin and 31 of them to the deadly duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. But there is a bigger picture to be considered.
This series is crucial for both sides as far as the WTC final is concerned. India need to win 3-0 or 3-1 at least to assure themselves a place in the title clash.
India lead 2-0 and it means they need just 1 win from the remaining 2 games to seal a place. Should India end up winning 2-0, 2-1 or drawing 2-2, then they will hope New Zealand beat Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka and Australia are still in contention.
The Indore Test begins on March 1. India will push for a 3-0 win and possibly want to make it 4-0, something they did back in 2013.
Australia’s injury woes continue with Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood missing the first 2 Tests. David Warner and Hazlewood are flying back home due to not being able to recover in time for Indore. Warner was replaced by Matt Renshaw after a concussion during the Delhi Test.
India pretty much have this in the bag. So let’s see what happens in the remaining 2 Tests.
