The Indian team will host Australia for the third Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 at the Holkar Stadium in Indore starting March 1. The hosts won the opening two matches with dominant performances to take a big 2-0 lead in the four-match series and enter the Indore Test as favourites.
The Indore pitch has provided a balanced surface in the past red-ball matches and the pitch for the upcoming Test is looking neutral in the latest picture. There is small amount of grass in the middle with almost no visible cracks. Batters are likely to do well if the grass cover remains. Big scores are missing in this series, as spinners have thoroughly dominated.
The Holkar Stadium in Indore has been host to two Tests before this, with both of them being won by the Indian side. The last Test match at the venue was held in December 2019 between India and Bangladesh, while the last international match was against New Zealand in the recently concluded limited overs series.
Bowlers, especially spinners, pulled off impressive spells in Nagpur and Delhi Tests, which led many highlighting the pitch conditions. Pitch conditions have always been a significant talking point in Border-Gavaskar Trophy history and the ongoing series is no different.
Many former cricketers have shared their thoughts on the spin-friendly pitches for the first two Tests and it might be the same case for the Indore Test.
The former Australian great Ian Healy called the Nagpur Pitch “pathetic” and asked the ICC to intervene. Indian spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja bagged a combined 15 wickets in the Nagpur Test and 16 in the Delhi Test. However, the Indian batters managed to perform comparatively well and that proved a big difference in the first two matches.
Meanwhile, the formers Indian cricketers Sunil Gavaskar, Harbhajan Singh, and Ravi Shastri have defended the Indian pitches and dismissed claims of doctored pitches. However, after an inspection, the match referee Andy Pycroft rated the Nagpur and Delhi pitches as average in the ICC reports.
